Across all healthcare specialties, recent technologic developments have allowed medical providers to learn more about how the body’s own immune system contributes to disease states. Often times, the perception is that external influences are the primary causation of disease wherein many times, it is the body’s internal response to a trigger that creates the constellation of signs and symptoms we recognize as a particular diagnosis.
A classic example of this is Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) which is a hotbed of recent Ophthalmic research. Ever since the clinical and commercial success of Tepezza entered the medical arena in 2020, now a multitude of pharmaceutical companies are conducting high level clinical trials to push to the forefront of TED management.
Historically, TED followed old medical wisdom; “if there are 10 ways to treat a disease, that means none of the 10 work well”. From high dose corticosteroids to orbital radiation to invasive facial surgery, TED has been a complex puzzle for physicians to tackle as the myriads of treatments developed through the decades of managing this terrible disease has never led to a minimally invasive yet widely effective therapy.
Now with the immunomodulatory therapy that Tepezza offers, practitioners are able to help patients at an earlier stage of TED with greater rates of satisfactory control over the disease while having a lower incidence of side effects/sequalae, giving hope to hundreds of thousands of TED patients suffering worldwide. Making future immunomodulatory treatments like Tepezza even more effective with even fewer side effects is driving this huge recent push we see in Ophthalmic research.
